AEP and Stream Energy Scam

I was notified by mail that I had not paid my May statement to Stream Energy, so I immediately got Stream on the phone and paid the bill by credit card. The next day I was driving in my car and I got a call from a man saying he was AEP and that my electricity would be disconnected because of non payment. I explained to him that I had paid it by phone yesterday, he could tell that I was very upset and offered to get Stream Energy on the line for me so I could resolve the problem with them. A woman saying she was with Stream Energy then came on the line telling me that my account had been red flagged and she could walk me through the process of same day payment so my electricity would not be disconnected. When she told me that I should go to my bank and get cash then take the cash to either Wallgreens or Dollar General to make the payment. When she told me that the amount I would need to pay was $498 (my electricity bill was only $130). She explained that her records showed $498 and because my account been red flagged I would need to pay that amount or my electricity would be disconnected, but not to worry there would be a full investigation and that if they were in error I would be refunded the full amount. She told me that she would stay on the line with me because if the call got disconnected my electricity would be disconnected. I went to my bank with this woman on the line with me and ask the first bank employee I saw if there was a police officer in the building. The bank manager then came and took me to a cubicle. I explained to her what had taken place and she told me to hang up it sounded like a scam and we would call Stream Energy. That’s what I did and Stream told me it was definitely a scam that my account was fine. The scam caller called me back but I didn’t take the call. Apparently, the scammers had gotten my Stream Statement from my mailbox and proceeded with their scam.
