My situation starts in mid January with a man referred to as Aaron Mclain. I was interested in learning real estate investing so he started talking to me through Facebook messenger. I just assumed he found me in one of the investment groups I was in. We talked for a few weeks when he started to tell me about crypto currency. I was a little familiar with it as I already had Bit, lite, and ethereum that I’d bought the year prior. Anyway, he starts telling me about the private investment firm his associate runs. It takes me a while, but I do finally agree to sign on. I had googled the company address (it was located in New York which is where Aaron Mclain claimed to be from) and the website, which has now been taken down, seemed ok. So, I watched my $1000 investment grow. I checked the site almost daily. According to what was told to me when I signed up, I could withdraw my money in 3 months (March 2018).
Mclain introduces me via email to Nick Heslop, who I believed to be the owner of Platinum. He managed another company called Global Trading Union or Market (the name seemed to change with the emails), helping clients purchase bitcoin quickly. I was sent an application to fill out with paperwork and everything so again I’m thinking this is a legitimate job. So, I work for this company for a few weeks purchasing and selling bitcoin. Didn’t seem much different than what I did for myself, it was just for other people.
Sometime during all of this the Platinum Website went down permanently, coicidently at the same time I was about to withdraw. The facebook group I had been added to also disappeared, along with my now $2000 in earnings. Not soon after that I get a large sum of over $30,000 sent to my account. My cooordinator had told me I might be getting one so I assumed that was it. Next thing I know my ban account gets shut down for over 2 weeks. Later I learned from my back that my account had been tagged for fraud and that I was being used a ‘mule’ for iligitemate practices. I felt pretty stupid at this point. I can’t work full time and have a child with special needs so I thought this job was a blessing not my downfall. So I had no way to access any of my funds for the next few months
On April 15, 2018 I finally received notification to my email (after sending several angry messages to the Aaron Mclain person) that my investment had been transfered to a company called Repecrypto. I tried calling the number on the website and sending messeages through the live chat and their questions area, but no one ever replied back to me. There was no place to leave a voicemail either. After I got logged in, there was still no place to contact anyone or even instructions on how to withdraw. There were no policies posted, there was no way to opt out of the services, nothing; not even an address. Just another plain one page site with a counter on it. Not soon after that, the Repecrypto.com site goes down too.
At this point I was pissed but convinced that I had lost my money to an entire team of scammers working together. The timeline of events matched way too perfectly.
Fast forward to now. A few nights ago on a wimb I decided to check the Repecrypto site and it is functioning again. I decide to reach out to someone on their live chat box and I get a response. I was sure to screenshot our conversation. When I asked about my account, because my password had been changed the rep told me I had $24,000 and that I was required to pay a deposit that is 30% of the total in order to withdraw. Everything is about that is wrong. So I ask why I would pay, when the standard is to just have the fee taken from total amount withdrawn. I was informed that it was a strict policy ONLY for those that were transfered from Platinum ie me, because the company had mistankenly given the wrong people other’s investments. I’m pretty livid now. I changed my password and got into my account and it only reads a little over $6,000 so now I know this company is definitely doing shady operations. He gives me the email to the “manager over the platinum trafer accounts” .
I have asked this person several times for the supposed policies because I have never seen, heard, nor agreed to sign any such policies. I have also explained very directly that I was never given any opportunity to decline service or opt out as the “transfer” process was started and completed prior to my knowledge and without my consent. It is simply ridiculous and ludacris to expect me to deposit $7200 into an account to receive my own funds that may not even exist anymore.
I have already filed a complaint with the FTC and I will be filing more reports so that others don’t get caught up in this elaborate scheme like my idiot self did. The stories were just believeable enough. I did finally find out that the “co-owner” of Repecrypto is a man named Dan Booth and his wife’s name is Sheila Booth. I’m wondering if my investment helped them pay for their vacations… The company is supposedly located in San Franscisco. Coincidentally, Aaron Mclain had moved out to California right around the time Repecrypto took over Platinum, the company he got me to sign up for.
This company has absolutely no transparency and they are not very cooperative. I wonder what company it will turn into next, because this is how scams like this operate. I learned the hard way. I have chronic illness and my son has special needs, Aaron preyed on that information and my desperation to be able to pay our bills. People like this are evil and I hope they all get caught.
